Make Monday The Best Day Ever

Make Monday The Best Day Ever

Monday sets the tone for the rest of the week.  If it sucks, it feels like the rest of the week will follow suit.  Because an entire sucky week is just the pits, I go out of my way to make Monday great.  If Monday is happy, so is Tuesday through Friday.

Because I don’t want to just sit around and wait for great stuff to happen, I have kept a mental file of tips shared by others , acquired from magazines, googled, and learned from experience.  I use these tips to make Monday the best day ever.

Saturday Should Be Fun Day
When I have free time, usually during holidays or vacations, I usually spread out my work for the week. There is cooking, cleaning, dusting, sweeping, mopping, laundry, shopping and oh so much more. I have learned to spread out my house work throughout the week so that I don’t have to spend the weekend doing laundry.

  • Monday–nothing
  • Tuesday–bills
  • Wednesday–recycling
  • Thursday–my day (for a long bath, diy mani-pedi)
  • Friday–usually devoted to getting kids to school or leisure
  • Saturday–something that I want to do, or nothing, and running around with the kids
  • Sunday–grocery shopping, meal prep

15 Minutes Per Load
I once counted how many loads of laundry I amassed throughout the week. It was well over 15 loads, not including sheets and towels. Weekend laundry pretty much prevents anything else from happening.  Unless you have a mini laundromat in your home, a weeks worth of laundry for a family of four may start at 6am on Saturday and extend until bed time on Sunday.

To keep my laundry in check, I came up with a little schedule

  • Monday–whites
  • Tuesday–darks
  • Wednesday–school uniforms
  • Thursday–jeans
  • Friday–delicates or things that should be hung to dry

As my kids got older, I had to change my schedule. Each kid over 13 gets their own day of the week to do laundry–after school of course. If they need something washed when it is not their day, they have to make a request to another sibling to include it in their load. So far, so good.

Your Iron Is For Special Occasions
Laundry really kills my vibe. Ironing is a close second. (my third is sorting socks, my fourth is washing utensils) As a rule, if it requires more than a quick swipe on the steam setting, I will not iron it.

Laundry should be folded or hanged while it is still warm. (I like to touch and sniff warm loads.) A few good shakes and proper storage means that I now break out the iron for special occasions.

When all else fails, Downy Wrinkle Releaser actually works. If you choose your outfits the night before, you just hang, spray, smooth and wake up to mostly wrinkle free items.

Don’t Let Them Fool Ya’
If you have a significant other, roommate, children, etc., this rule is important. If you ask them if they straightened up, put things away, or know what they need for tomorrow, the answer will be “yes” when reality is the opposite. Always, always always proceed from the answer with a request for show and tell. Why you ask? Because if someone else has a problem on Monday morning, so do you!  Don’t let the confident answer fool you.

Though Sunday leads the calendar of events for the week, it clearly begins with Monday.  Short of staying in bed, you need to pull some tricks out of your hat to make your week start off right.  As you can see, for me anyway, it’s all about putting a plan in action.
