Let It Snow

When it snows, it glows!

Friday, December 8, 2017

On this day, in Louisiana and across much of the South, it snowed.  It was probably a twice, maybe thrice, in a lifetime experience.   This snow was not the typical snow for Louisiana that includes a few flurries that melt when they reach the ground.  Nor was it the sleet that we have become familiar with when the temps drop below freezing.  On this day, it snowed.  Like a mini blizzard.

We get a lot of rain and wind days in the South.  We are accustomed to strong thunderstorms, tropical depressions, and torrential downpours.  People will brave flooding streets and hurricane warnings.  But mention snow, and it is a wrap.  Everything shuts down and 90% of the population stays indoors.

For naysayers like myself, I was just vexed that we might have to miss work and school for snow.  When my phone started buzzing at 5am and I heard my daughter's voice and my dog's feet shuffling around, I lumbered out of bed to check out the fuss.  To my surprise, there was a layer of snow on everything.

In my house, on Facebook and SnapChat and pretty much all social media, there was a flood of joy.  Even my grumpy face cracked into a smile and I let a laugh escape.  OMG! Real freaking snow!  It was like Santa dropped presents off early and attached a note that said "Enjoy now!"

So what does snow look like in Southwest Louisiana.  It looks like this!

Pretty awesome right!  My kids loved it.  My dog loved it.  The neighbors loved it.  It was great!

There was snow everywhere.  On the rooftops, in the yard, on the trees, on cars.  And it actually snowed.  It looked like drizzle...  it just kept coming...  It got all over us when we went outside.  Of course, it melted as soon as it touched us.

Our local NBC Affiliate KPLC-TV accepted photos from people around the area.  Some of the photos were amazing.  People took pictures all around town and shared them on social media.  Porche' Aerial Imagery shared a video on the stations Facebook page.  KPLC also shared images submitted from viewers.  There were also lots of snowmen around the area.

It will likely be a while before we see snow like this in Southwest Louisiana.  One day of "real" snow every thirty or so years is probably all that we can handle.  What we will hopefully continue to see are days filled with both natural and man-made events that bring joy to our hearts and souls.  The Great Snow of 2017 is going down in the books as a day that filled our community with snow and many, many smiles.
