Part 2: Unsolicited Advice From Someone's Mother

Here are a few more tips to help you lead a happy, healthy, and harmonious adult life.

Make time for yourself (seriously):   Regardless of if you work 20 hours or 80 hours per week, you should make time for yourself.  When you develop your list of priorities or goals, living a healthy lifestyle should be tops.

  • Choose healthy meals--You don’t need to prepare chef-worthy food.  The salad bar at Whole Foods will provide you with good choices.
  • Stay active--Go to the gym, head to a class, ride your bike to work, do whatever it take to remain physically fit.  You should shoot for a minimum of 250 minutes of exercise per week.
  • Read for fun--Regardless of your career choice, you will very likely be using digital devices all day.  Be sure to unplug daily and read something that isn’t related to work.
  • Spend time with friends--Everyone needs friends with whom they can share their time, secrets and laughter.  Spend time with your friends!

Fast food is the devil:  If you want to spend more money than you should, jack up your cholesterol, and be forced to buy new clothes every year, go ahead and eat the stuff that you purchase through the window.  It is guaranteed to be pricey and filled with things that you can’t pronounce.  A better choice is to learn how to plan and pack your meals for your work week.

Learn to think on your feet:  Have you heard your parents say that someone has all book sense and no common sense?  They are referring to someone who is smart but maybe isn’t that great at problem solving.  Don’t let this be you!  Life is your classroom and you should learn from it.  Most of what you need to know to make it at work, at home and in the community you learn from experience.  Be open to learning new things.  Ask questions.  Always come up with multiple solutions for every question, scenario or problem.
