Middle Age Turn Up Still Rocks

Your priorities often change with age. Finding time  to bond with family and friends should always be at the top of the list.

I have been making excuses for years about not hanging out with friends.  Let's see.  There was the years where I was pregnant or nursing.  There was my work schedule.  There was my super busy life which involved shuttling the kids around.  Now it's football season and tumbling practice.

So after several years of not being in public without my children in tow, I made it out of the house for a belated birthday turn up.  My plan was to make an appearance and a quick exit.  But when I got my first cocktail in an actual martini glass instead of a plastic tumbler, I thought "Heck yea!"

I was expecting to feel uncomfortable.   However, that didn't happen.  My sister and mom were there and it totally wasn't weird.  Several friends also were relaxing with a parental.  I saw people who I've only talked to for years via social media or across a conference table.  It was nice to see everyone relaxed and smiling sans a google calendar and reading glasses.

The best part of the night, short of being out of the house, was being at a really nice adult lounge where everyone was happy to enjoy everything from jazz music to hip hop.  My favorite of course was the nineties.  I didn't cut loose like I wanted to.  The real reason had nothing to do with being more mature.  I was pretty sure that if I got too low I would need to make a trip to the chiropractor.

So the middle age turn up still rocks.  It is so much better than the college turn up.

  • I patronized a business where I actually know the owner.  It feels good to enjoy your time in a place operated by good people.
  • The place was spotless.  Everyone was respectful.  There were no creepy old men :)
  • The ladies room was clean.  I actually felt comfortable going alone.   No ladies stumbling in with smeared eyeliner.  Which means...
  • The a/c was on among other things.
  • I felt no pressure or desire to  stay out all night  (well maybe a little bit).  As a matter of fact when I began yawning amid all of the lights music and action, I knew it was time to head home.
  • When I got home, I was excited about my night out.  However, I was not making plans for part deux.  As a matter of fact, I wasn't making plans for any night out.

The middle age turn up is real.  The middle age turn up is fun.  But just like family mani - pedis and spa time, I think I'll save it for special occasions.  Here's looking forward to many more birthdays and time with friends and family.
